About

Who you're actually talking to.

No juniors handed to you, no deck for the sake of the deck. You talk to Alex, and the advice comes from someone who has carried the number, not just recommended it.

Alex Smith, founder of Silvertip Consulting

I'm Alex Smith, and I've spent my career on the inside of companies rather than beside them. Sales, operations, partnerships, the last decade in SaaS, and through all of it developing, building and leading teams. I know what it feels like to carry the number yourself.

I'm originally from Inuvik, NT. I spent my teenage years in Yellowknife, NT and Saskatoon, SK is where I've called home for the last 15 years.

Away from the desk I'm a very proud father. My son Everett is 12, and I coach his ball hockey team in the Saskatoon Ball Hockey League. Before coaching ball hockey, I volunteered and coached his baseball with Tim Hortons Learn to Play. My daughter is 8 and a competitive dancer, so weekends belong to courts and stages, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Silvertip takes on a small number of clients at a time, on purpose. You get a plan built around your business, and one measure that matters: did it move.

Being a connector is one of my biggest strengths. If I'm not the right person for your problem, I'll find someone who is and make the introduction myself. I'd rather hand you to the person who can help than take the work.

More than 15 years in sales, operations and partnerships, most of it managing teams. One exit, an IPO and multiple companies valued over a billion dollars.

What those seats mean for you

You're not hiring a list of job titles. But each seat I've held is a problem I've lived from the inside, and every one of them changes what you get when we work together.

On the phones

Kal Tire · SiteDocs · Vendasta

I started in inside sales at Kal Tire, then cold called as a business development rep at SiteDocs, then ran enterprise sales development at Vendasta. I've been the person handed a number and a list with no system behind it. So when we set a target together, it's one a real person can hit on an ordinary Tuesday, not one that only works in a forecast.

Running a branch

Enterprise Holdings, Commercial Truck Division

Before software I spent four years running a commercial truck rental branch: hourly staff, a physical fleet, customers who arrive at 7am already behind. That's where I learned that a process nobody owns falls apart the first busy week, and that your team will tell you exactly where it breaks if you ask them the right question.

Leading teams

Vendasta · SiteDocs · Harvard Media · Hypelocal

Most of the last decade has been hiring, coaching, rebuilding and sometimes letting go of teams, up to director level at SiteDocs and Harvard Media, and most recently at Hypelocal. That's why the people and accountability work isn't a framework I picked up. It's the part of the job I've been judged on, and the part I'm proudest of.

Taking a legacy business digital

Harvard Media

Harvard Media is a 120-year-old radio group in Saskatchewan and Alberta, and I was part of the leadership team through their move to digital-first. As Director of Growth I oversaw customer success and training operations, along with parts of revenue operations. The lesson I carry from it: an established business doesn't have to be torn down to sell differently. You build new offerings on top of what already works, and every one of them has to fix a real problem for the person or company on the other end. And your people have to believe in the change, not just be told about it. If the team doing the work doesn't think it's worth making, it happens reluctantly or not at all.

Partnerships and channel

Locafy · SiteDocs · Harvard Media · Hypelocal

I've spent years on the partnership and channel side, where growth is supposed to come from other people's customers. Done properly it beats every other channel on return, and I've watched it happen twice: the channel work at Locafy became one of the biggest revenue drivers behind their IPO, and the partnerships I led at SiteDocs returned more than any other revenue channel there. At Hypelocal I managed partnerships with platforms like Notion, HubSpot and Zapier. Most of it is relationship work and follow through, and most partner deals die quietly for lack of both. If your next number has to come from partners or a new channel, we'll build it around what partners actually do, not what the pitch deck promises.

Growth and operations at scale

Hypelocal

At Hypelocal I ran growth and operations alongside CEOs and owners, and the clients we worked with generated more than $600M in revenue and 40,000+ qualified leads. That's where I learned to tell the difference between automation that saves your team hours and automation that just moves the mess somewhere else.

From the people I've led

Building teams is the work I'm proudest of. Here's what a few of them had to say.

"I had the pleasure of working with Alex shortly after he joined my team in a leadership role, and his impact was immediate. Alex is a strong, people-first leader who communicates clearly and leads with trust."
Rashmeen Oad · Customer Success Manager, Harvard Media
"During my search for a job, my main priority was finding a place with great management. I came across SiteDocs where I met Alex. Even through my interview process with Alex, I could tell he was a kind individual who genuinely cared about his team and their success. The best thing about Alex is his ability to connect and be personable with everyone. I am fortunate to be apart of his team, I truly cannot have asked for a better manager!"
Shermeen Oad · Business Development Rep, SiteDocs
"Alex is by far the best manager I have had the opportunity to work for. He's a people manager continuously caring and looking out for his team. Alex gives each member of his team equal 1-on-1 time to insure their success in the industry."
Eisa Baasit · Sales Development Rep, SiteDocs
"His strategic vision was incredible, but it was his genuine investment in my professional growth that I valued most. He's one of the best leaders I've ever worked for."
Ali Marei · Marketing Professional, Harvard Media
"His business acumen is extremely high and he isn't scared to share his mind in strategic meetings with any organization. As a manager, he can get people to rally around him no problem."
Ian Sicat · Business Development Team Lead, Wealthsimple
"Every conversation we had he offered me valuable insights on how to improve, but he also never forgot to encourage what I was doing right."
Kristin Brown · Sr. Sales Operations Associate, STEMCELL Technologies
"Alex never truly has you behind in any situation and leans into my skills rather than reflect his beliefs into mine."
Grey Fraser · Partner Manager, SiteDocs
"He is direct and is not afraid of having the tough conversations. Alex coaches in a scalable manner which I could replicate to my team. This was a huge factor in exceeding our 2022 targets."
Matthew Gallant · Sales Executive, SiteDocs
